5 Pieces of Advice for First-time College Players
Aug 26, 2025
One of my players left today to move into college.
He’ll be a freshman this fall.
Here’s the advice I gave him (and it applies to every new college player):
1. Drop the expectations
You don’t “have to” prove yourself in the fall.
I’ve seen players look terrible in the fall and end up All-Conference in the spring.
And I’ve seen players look amazing in the fall, then transfer because they never played.
2. Prioritize the human element
Coaches are more likely to give extra chances to players they like as people.
- Build rapport
- Ask questions
- Push yourself
- Be coachable
3. Keep the partying in check
You’ve never lived away from home before.
Make friends, meet new people, have fun…
But keep the main thing the main thing.
4. Attack the classroom
Get off to a strong start academically.
If baseball struggles out of the gate, your confidence won’t be tied to one thing.
5. FUN is the secret unlock
It’s not a drill. It’s not a cue.
It’s FUN.
The more fun you have, the freer you’ll play.
I’ve never met anyone who got worse by having more fun.
To every freshman moving into college baseball...
Play hard. Have fun. Keep perspective.
And remember: it’s not about being perfect in the fall.
It’s about who you become by the spring.
