5 Questions College Coaches Ask When They Call

Aug 16, 2025

August 1st marks the first day college coaches can start contacting 2027s.

A lot of phone calls have already happened.

Many more will be made in the coming weeks and months.

But here’s what most players don’t realize:

If you can’t hold a real conversation, you might lose the opportunity

College coaches aren’t just evaluating your tools — they’re asking themselves:

  1. Can I spend 8 hours a day with this kid?
  2. Will he be coachable, or shut down?
  3. Is he a good communicator? One-word answers = missed opportunities.
  4. Is he fun to be around? No personality = red flag.
  5. Is he clear about his goals? Lack of clarity = confusion about goals.

Let’s be honest — for most 16-year-olds, talking to a coach on the phone is awkward. It’s basically a stranger calling you to talk about your future.

That’s why preparation matters

Know how to talk about yourself.

Know what you want.

Know how to ask questions.

The kids who stand out this week won’t just be the ones throwing 90 or hitting nukes.

They'll also be the ones who can talk like a teammate, think like a competitor, and connect like a human.
