Brenton Doyle Changes
Jul 31, 2024Brenton Doyle was never supposed to play in the major leagues.
I mean he was playing D2 college baseball at Shepard University just a few years ago.
In the month of July he tied the MLB lead for home runs.
But his path goes to show that the cream rises to the top, no matter where you go to school.
"I'm living proof that you don't need to go to a big division 1 school to live out your dreams"
He was able to play right away as a freshman, and started 52 games while batting .327 AVG.
After his junior season, he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 4th round.
Last year in 2023 he made his MLB debut, and in his first season in the major leagues, he won a gold glove.
However, his bat struggled.
He finished the 2023 season hitting .203 AVG with a .593 OPS.
He knew he needed to make some changes heading into 2024.
"Quieting the body more."
That's what Doyle said his main focus was this past off-season.
It's paying off so far:
Let's take a deeper dive now into the movement change Doyle made this past off-season.
2023: Last season Doyle was standing a bit taller than he is this season. You can also see that his hands are starting lower.
Remember, the big thing that Doyle said he wanted to do was "quiet the body more"
You can tell a big difference with this picture below of how much more bent over he is now.
Now, let's look at the side angle:
The biggest thing that stands out to me right away is where he's placing his hands.
His hands are starting higher this season.
Last season his hands were lower, which is fine, but they never came moved higher during his gather, causing him to not be able to hit for any power on pitches up in the zone.
Check out the difference in his heat maps between this season and last season.
Summary:
Brenton Doyle made a few changes in 2024.
1. He decided to have less movement
2. Started his hands higher
3. Bent over more in his setup
* Lastly, it's always inspiring to see a player like Brenton take a non traditional route to the MLB. Coming from a D2 school goes to show you that if you're good enough you will be found.
