The Recruiting Times

1 Tip each week to help you in the recruiting process.

I spent two days watching players at a showcase...

I’ve been on the road nonstop lately—traveling, watching players, and most recently, attending a showcase.

I wanted to share a few quick observations for this week’s newsletter.

I hope these help you in your recruiting journey.

1. Be Ready to Hit

I heard a Latin coach tell a player: “You can’t walk off the island.”

Translation: You’re not getting recruited by taking pitches.

At most showcases, your AB starts 1-1.

If you get a good pitch early, you need to swing the bat.

Standing there and hoping to walk? That won’t get you an offer.

2. Looking the Part Matters

If a college assistant coach wants to recommend you to the staff, there’s one thing that makes it easier:

You look the part.

If you don’t play well but look physical and athletic, coaches at least feel like the risk was reasonable.

But if you don’t look the part and struggle? The coach who recommended you loses credibility.

You can’t control your height—but you can control your strength, build, and how you present yourself.

3. Look Like a Baseball Player

Details matter.

  • Wear baseball socks
  • Tuck in your shirt
  • Don’t roll up your sleeves “to look cool” (saw this twice)

These things matter to coaches more than you think.

4. Coaches Are Watching… Even When You Think They Aren’t

Players say: “That coach wasn’t paying attention to me.”

Yes, he was.

He just didn’t want other coaches to know. Coaches are competing for the same players.

If a couple D1 coaches suddenly move to watch a certain LHH at the plate, you’ll see every other coach start circling that kid’s number too.

It’s just like dating: If someone shows interest, suddenly everyone wants to know what they’re missing.

5. Development > Performance

Don’t view a showcase as a “must-perform” event.

Use it as a chance to get more reps, face good competition, and develop your game.

If you treat it like practice—not a tryout—you’ll relax and play your best.
