Time Management for hitters

In this post, I will explain how you can help hitters manage their time by using something I call "The Daily Blueprint" to maximize their potential as a hitter. 

"Compound interest is the 8th wonder of the world" - Albert Einstein. 

We're not talking about the S&P 500 today, but compounding holds in every aspect of life. 

Hitters will not 'Will' their way to becoming the best hitter they can be.

They need to have a plan. 

A plan that is simple and repeatable.

There needs to be a system to train them that no matter how they feel today, "XYZ" will still get done. 

Unfortunately, most get so overwhelmed and say "they are too busy," so no system is ever put in place. 

Most make a plan too complex 

• Get frustrated by not sticking to their plan. 

• The plan is unrealistic "I'm going to workout 4x every day." 

• They try to remember the plan in their head and don't write it down.

• Most need to stick with the plan longer to see results.

These issues will be fine if they follow the simple steps below. 

Here's how to step by step:

Step 1: Buy a notebook 

This notebook is where they're going to write down their daily plan.

I like using a notebook because you can check things off as they get done, and something about checking each one off builds confidence as the day goes along.

Step 2: Write the date and numbers 1-5.

Each day they will write Hitting Blueprint at the top, then the date (ex. 1/24) on the top of the page. 

Underneath it, they will list

Step 3: Make the List 

I will give you a few examples of what players will write down. 

Again, it HAS to be simple. If they start listing 10 different things a day, that won't be sustainable, They will only accomplish some of their daily tasks and, eventually, get frustrated and quit. 

They're going to do this every single day. 

Example:

    Hitting Blueprint                

           1/24      

1. Eat breakfast

2. Say hi to someone at school you normally don't talk to

3. Take 10 swings. 

4. Lift weights for 1 hour

5. Watch 10 minutes of video on hitting.

Okay, so how does this help hitters reach their potential? 

1. Eat breakfast 

   • Nutrition

2. Say hi to someone at school you don't talk to

   • Personal development 

3. Take 10 swings. 

   • Hitting development 

4. Lift weights for 1 hour 

   • Player Development 

5. Watch 10 minutes of video on hitting. 

   • Continued education.

      

We're getting them to build confidence. 

If I said 100 swings, that would only sometimes be repeatable 

Something will come up with school or family, and they won't be able to do it, leaving them discouraged. 

They can take 10 practice swings every day, no matter what. 

This isn't saying that you can't take more than 10 swings or only watch 10 minutes of video; it's saying that you're at least going to do that. 

You can keep these the same for day 2 and continue with them until they become a habit, or you can change them. 

Here are some more examples: 

This is going to build confidence over time. 

If the player has a grade issue, I would put something simple like "spend 20 minutes studying math" as a number on the list. 

Most coaches don't realize that players are human, and to be present in the box, they need to have their life in order. 

Improving grades in school = more hits. 

Good deeds like "saying hi to the kid nobody talks to" makes you feel better about yourself = confidence over time. 

I know this was the case for me. Being present in the batter box is hard enough with nothing going on.

Imagine what it's like when you're not prepared and taking care of business off the field.
