What Velocity Do I Need to Get Recruited?
Feb 24, 2026
Every pitcher wants to know:
“What velo do I need to get recruited?”
Here’s the truth:
👉 There is no magic number.
👉 There are ranges and context.
When you see “average D1 fastball is 89,” that doesn’t mean:
“If I touch 89 once, I’m a D1 arm.”
It means:
- That dude is probably sitting around 89
- And likely touching 92–93 on the high end
There’s a huge difference between:
👉 “I topped at 90 once on a perfect day”
vs.
👉 “I live 87–90 every time I toe the rubber”
Coaches Don’t Recruit Your Instagram Story
They recruit your true game speed.
And even then, velo is just one part of the file:
- Body type
- Command
- Movement
- Secondary pitches
- Competitiveness
Velo gets your video watched.
Command + pitch ability get you pursued.
Chase velocity, but not at the expense of everything else.
A hard-throwing liability is still a liability.
Become a pitcher who happens to throw hard, not a thrower who happens to pitch.
