Why Your Position Matters In Recruiting
Jun 26, 2025
When it comes to college baseball recruiting, not all positions are viewed equally by coaches.
Understanding how coaches rank each role can relieve stress, and help guide you in your recruiting process. I’ve spent a lot of time speaking with coaches and watching showcases, and here’s how I’ve seen things unfold:
Pitchers First
College coaches always prioritize adding quality arms to their rosters. If you’re a pitcher, focus on two things above all else—velocity and command.
Coaches will flock to a pitcher with both. If you can project as a starter, you’ll have schools lining up.
Up-the-Middle Value
Shortstop, center field, and catchers are the next hottest commodities.
Why? Players in these positions bring athleticism, baseball IQ, and most importantly—versatility.
Coaches love infielders who can slide to multiple spots, and outfielders who can cover serious ground. If you can play up the middle and shift to another spot when needed, you’re instantly more valuable.
Corner Players:
 (1B/3B LF/RF)
The truth is, these spots often get filled last, and unless you’re a game-changer at the plate, coaches may wait to recruit you. The bat needs to play—power, consistency, and the ability to get on base are what separate the corners from the pack.
Think of it this way...
A player who starts in LF/RF for their high school team, is not going to play SS in college. Where as a high school SS could play SS in college but also move to LF/RF if need be.
Real Example
A coach may wait until deep in recruiting to target a right-handed corner outfielder, but they’ll move fast to grab a switch-hitting shortstop or a left-handed catcher with a strong arm.
Versatility and special skill sets always get bumped to the front of the line.
Versatility Is Your Best Friend
Play as many positions as possible. If you can handle both SS and 2B, or play center field and step into the infield as needed, your value—and your opportunities—skyrocket.
Key Points to Remember
- Pitchers & "up the middle players: coaches target you early
- Corner players: the bat will get you there
- Versatility: the best ticket to more offers
