Underrated Skill of a Great Coach

Let me tell you a quick story.

This past season I was coaching in the Orioles organization.

Each day I would make a PowerPoint presentation.

It would be 10-15 slides on that day's starting pitcher, continued education on various subjects in the game, and highlight players from the previous day.

It was a lot of work doing that for 120 games.

The PowerPoint presentation itself was very good.

However, when we were on the road in North Carolina facing the Low A Texas Ranger's Affiliate, something happened.

I did what I normally did that day.

I made the PowerPoint presentation and went over the starting pitcher, showed some ABs of MLB hitters, and highlighted some of our players from the previous game.

After the meeting was over I went back to the coach's office and told myself, that can never happen again.

There was nothing that much different in that meeting vs. any other one I had done that year.

And that was the problem.

I knew I wasn't getting better.

Nobody else could tell, just me.

I knew inside, it wasn't very good. I can do much better speaking in front of our players.

I can see it in their body language that they weren't engaged

I want to work with someone who is the best at communicating and public speaking.

So I went on the internet and found the best, Joe Ferraro

It's funny because we have all this technology in baseball.

We know how the body is supposed to work.

New Drills?..check

Practice Design..check

But why are we looking over the most important part of all of that, communication?

I'm not talking about sending out text messages to players. I'm talking about human-to-human communication.

In today’s episode, I speak to Joe Ferraro, host of the One Percent Better Podcast.

High school English teacher, writer, speaker, and my personal speaking coach.

Joe has spent over 20 years teaching – his favorite subject being public speaking.

His skills in public speaking have allowed him to become a leading podcast host, with his podcast, the One Percent Better Podcast.

Since starting his podcast, Joe has hosted guests such as Seth Godin, James Clear, Annie Duke, Daniel Pink, and many more.

Joe also spent around 20 years coaching high school and varsity baseball, starting his coaching career as the youngest head coach in NCAA history at the age of 21.
